Language education policy and practice in East and Southeast Asia

Summary

Summary of language education in Asia

  • The trend there for the learning of English and the creation of EMI schools is even more marked
  • The early introduction of English into the primary curriculum along with the severe shortage of qualified English teachers
  • Native speakers of English
  • The respective national languages are heavily promoted within each nation
  • English is the first ʻforeignʼ language introduced to the curricula
  • Despite the efforts of the Philippines and, to a lesser extent Malaysia, and while countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam do offer some bilingual programmes to minority groups, very few of the regionʼs local languages are being used as languages of education
  • We thus envisage a situation in which the majority are monolingual in the national language and an elite are bilingual in the national language and English becoming the norm for East and Southeast Asia

Final Assignment:
What have you especially understood or thought in this class which has discussed language education in Asia? What do you think about language education in Asia? Discuss this issue based on your own background and identity.
